People often tell me “I can’t do what you do…you know, talk to the dead.”

I’d always tell them that they can. In fact they’ve been doing it all their life and it is just known by another name. Praying. Technically you talk to the dead when you pray. There’s the saints, Jesus, Mother Mary, your parents and those that went before you. You do talk to them. It’s just that praying sounds so benign, harmless and normal.

Then they’d look at me weirdly and say, “Yes, but the dead don’t answer back.”

They do. They do in so many ways.

A widow listens to a song played in a cafe. The song brings back memories of her husband – it was their song. It was her husband’s way of saying “hey, I still love you.”  Yes, fleeting songs, screaming billboards — to that nagging voice in your head that sounds exactly like your own; only sterner…or more loving, more forgiving…

A Buddhist monk once told me, “Praying is when you talk to God. Meditating is when God talks to you.”
